True Damage - GIANTS

For this session, I’ve been analyzing my favorite animated music videos. To get ideas and figure out the “secret formula” for a visually pleasing music video. Rather than typing up a blog that will discuss all my findings in the countless animated music videos I’ve watched, I’ve narrowed this discuss one music video that really amaze me. As seen in the title I’ve decided to write about True Damage - GIANTS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVZpHFXcFJw

First off with Riot’s new Hip-Hop song released on October 10, 2019: GIANTS. It contains a lot of fast and smooth transitions, color scheme, mixture of 3D and 2D animation, and the use of reference. The 2D characters seen the shots are mainly hand-drawn (2D) and the background and special effects are 3D. This mixture of 3D and 2D give the animation a lot of life and form. On top of the combination of 2D and 3D animation, the animators created very smooth transition from singer to singer. Another major detail about this project is how smooth the 2D characters move. It is evident that they (animators) used references/actors to replicate the movement in the animation. These aspects together create an amazing animated music video that people probably have on loop.

After reviewing the video for small details (special effects, colors, imperfections, etc..), I’ve decided to include some of these aspects into my animations. I am most definitely going to learn transitions and camera movement. I believe transitions and camera movement gives the animation more “life” and flow to it. If I have enough time with the animation, I’ll add special effects such as reflections to give it more detail.

Other than analyzing other animated music videos to get ideas from them, I’ve created a script for my animation. I’m going to reveal the plan I have for just verse one because I want to focus on this section. For the next blog post, I’m hoping to have the rough sketch, line art and semi colored version of this outline completed.

[Verse 01]

“Forty days and forty nights
I waited for a girl (boy) like you
To come and save my life
All the days I waited for you
You know the ones who said
I'd never find someone like you”

Girl jolts away from her sleep.
Screen panels out to her surroundings: Desk, posters, bookshelf, etc…
Girl slides off her bed and looks at the door: She reaches out towards the door knob and opens it.
The door is a portal to another dimension. Instead of a continuation of her colorful room… It opens up to a dull world.
Screen panels to the new world and slowly introduces the Boy. He is gray-scale (opposite of the colorful world beforehand).
The Boy extends out a stick/string towards the Girl. She grabs the stick and he yanked her into the world inside her room.

For my next blog post I'm hoping to finish the first verse and start on the Chorus (Rough Sketch). December and finals are nearing. I want to get as much done as possible before my workload becomes too great.
